It's funny that you should mention those movies you haven't seen, because of those I would add Robert Towne's CHINATOWN and Paul Schrader's TAXI DRIVER to that list of original screenplays, though both are obviously derivative of genre-pictures, literature, and other intertextual influences (noir films, Dostoevsky, Bresson, etc.) Also, APOCALYPSE NOW is largely based on Conrad's novel HEART OF DARKNESS, so I would argue that it is not wholly original. My favorite from your list is... Pulp Fiction.
